Peridot’s name was derived from middle English as Peridote which means bright spot and in French peritot and in Greek peridona which means plentiful. In Arabic word Peridot was named faridat, which simply means Gem.
Egyptians called the Peridot as the gem of the sun and the Greeks believed that the Peridot was an "evening emerald" and it is said that Peridot was Cleopatra’s favourite gem. Peridot is one sacred stone which was set in the foundation of the city walls of Jerusalem.
Hawaiians believed that Peridot is the sacred stone which depicts the Goddess Pele's tears. Goddess pele, volcano goddess living in the crater of Kilauea on the island of Hawaii. Peridot’s where believed to ward off evil and to protect the wearer from danger.
The origin of Peridot are Arizona, Pakistan, Burma and China. One can find an occasional cat's eye effect and star effect in the Peridot. The chemical composition of Peridot is (Mg, Fe)2SiO4 magnesium and Iron rich. The Refractive index is 1.630 - 1.695 and the hardness is 6.5 - 7.00.The Specific gravity is 3.3-3.4
